I admire Marissa Mayer’s decision to ban remote work at Yahoo! It’s bold – in strong opposition to current trends, and I think it will increase value at Yahoo! for the following reasons:
1.) Filtering out people who aren’t dedicated
I think it will cause people who are only at Yahoo! for the paycheck and to achieve “work/life balance” and don’t really love their job or have passion for Yahoo!’s mission to leave. This might create problems in the short-term, but in the long-term, it will ensure that the people who stay, and the people who are coming in, are truly dedicated. I believe a company needs to have a team of people that are truly dedicated to accomplishing the company’s goals in order to be successful.
2.) Face to face interaction is extremely important
Having people interact in person is extremely important for creating a strong company culture, and, as James Altucher points out, for people to exchange ideas. Video conferencing and other tools, simply can’t replicate the value of in person interaction.
Conclusion: I’m not surprised how much backlash she’s getting, and I can see it creating problems in the short-term, but I think the decision is in the company’s best long-term interest.
