When faced with a new responsibility, opportunity, or challenge, I either learn it or delegate it.
If it’s something within my skill-set and interests and/or it falls within my scope of responsibility, I learn it. To learn something, I either leverage the abundance of free or cheap educational content, or someone in my professional network who’s an expert on the topic. For simple and commonly covered topics, the interweb is usually the best place (I typically start with Quora, Skillshare, or Udemy). For more complex topics that require more personalized advice, I leverage someone in my network who’s had a lot of experience with it.
If it’s something that’s outside of my skillset or scope, it’s best to delegate it. You don’t want to take on something that you’re not capable of doing because of lack capacity or ability – it’s best to delegate to someone who’s better qualified to do it. That means hiring someone or having someone else within the company do it.
Conclusion: I consider my ability to learn quickly to be one of my greatest strengths. And it’s a great skill to have at a startup because things change so quickly. This also stresses the importance for strong professional network.
